Welcome to Cofnod

North Wales Environmental Information Service

Cofnod is one of a UK-wide network of Local Records Centres (LRCs). We provide a local focus for the collation, management and provision of environmental data. Our aim is to provide access to the best possible information, to assist biodiversity conservation in North Wales. We also aim to provide support to local volunteer recorders.

Cofnod is in the process of bringing together a variety of different datasets from a range of organisations, groups and individual recorders. Although we will concentrate on biological records such as species and habitats, over time, we will add other environmental datasets, such as geological data. Although our focus will be mainly on land, we will accept records from the marine environment and pass them to the most appropriate marine recording scheme.

Cofnod is a 'not for profit' organisation, with most of our running costs being met by supporting partners. Since April 2007 we have been providing a range of services to supporting partners, commercial organisations and voluntary recorders.

Biodiversity

LRCs are part of a wider network of organisations working under the umbrella of the National Biodiversity Network (NBN). Together these organisations support the delivery of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. At a local level this plan translates to Local Biodiversity Action Plans (LBAPs). The information supplied by Cofnod will feed directly into the LBAP process, helping to assess habitats and species against national and local targets.

Geodiversity

Geodiversity is the rich variety of rocks, minerals, fossils, landforms, soils and related processes that form our planet. It is inextricably linked with biodiversity and helps us understand the underlying controls on landscape, habitat, species and soils. Many important geological sites have been notified as SSSIs. Many others are designated as Regionally Important Geodiversity Sites (RIGS). Cofnod is working with local geologists to make information on geodiversity more widely available. Go to the geology 'links' on our Contacts page to find out more about geodiversity.
