The BeeWatch survey will provide important data. It will be used to map bumblebee species distributions, which are integral to the conservation of these much-loved insects. All that is needed is a digital photo, a date and a location - it only takes a few minutes!

This workshop which is to be held at one of North Wales’ premier butterfly sites will be led by Dr Tom Brereton, Head of Monitoring at Butterfly Conservation. The workshop consists of a classroom session explaining how to do the Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey (WCBS) and why it is important. This will be followed by an outdoor ‘hands on’ session covering butterfly identification, setting up a route and completing a survey. This is a free event but booking is essential as places are limited. Please bring a packed lunch and wear appropriate clothing. For further details and to book your place, please contact: survey

Fun day for all the family: bushcraft; nature and history walks; pond dipping; minibeast hunting; wildlife gardening; stalls; arts and crafts; and more; Rhys Trimble & Annwfn poetry and music (2pm); light refreshments on sale.
The Group's aims are to explore the Island and record the flora in each monad, contributing towards a revised Anglesey Flora and the next Atlas of the British Flora (2020). We will also make special note of any rare and scarce taxa, to update the Rare Plant Register. Group members are encouraged to share knowledge with one-another and attract more active botanists into the field and to join the Botanical Society of the British Isles (BSBI).
It may be possible to arrange additional excursions, at short notice to further these aims and to start monitoring selected plants that are a feature of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for CCW.
Please note that attendance at field meetings is at your own risk. Do wear suitable clothing and footwear for all terrain and weathers, bring sufficient food and water and be aware of safety issues, especially those associated with wetlands. We will make every effort to adhere to this programme; but it is important that you confirm attendance in advance, so we have some idea of the numbers. Also do check that the meeting is going ahead and find out about the access/parking arrangements.
PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO SHARE TRANSPORT; IF YOU REQUIRE ADVICE ON LOCATIONS TO MEET OTHERS/ LIFTS/ PUBLIC TRANSPORT LINKS please contact Joanna.
Join Cofnod and the British Arachnological Society for a fortnight focused on spiders. Several events have been organised to cover species identification and sampling methods. This package of events is ideal for those wishing to learn more about this important invertebrate group, perhaps building on existing knowledge.
The package starts on the 13th May with an introductory course giving you a grounding in the basics. Those wishing to apply their skills in the field can join Richard for a day’s fieldwork on the 23rd May, where we’ll encounter additional species of interest.
Over the weekend of 25–27th May you are invited to join the British Arachnological Society at Plas Tan-y-bwlch for their A.G.M./field weekend. During this weekend there’ll be specialist identification workshops, lectures and fieldwork sessions available for you to attend.

We are really hoping that friends from outside the county will find time to come to some of our meetings this year. We have quite a backlog of recording to be done and would be most grateful for any help you can offer. Merioneth is a beautiful county with many varied habitats [and the weather often better than it is reputed to be!] so it repays a visit on many fronts!
We would also welcome any early records you hold for VC48, even if they had previously been passed on to the Vice-county Recorder.
Regards
Sarah Stille

The Mammals in a Sustainable Environment Project (MISE) & Menter Môn will be conducting an Otter survey on Anglesey on Saturday 26th May. This follows on from the coastal otter survey conducted in 2011, where we found evidence of otters at a number of sites across the island. This year we will survey a number of inland freshwater sites, aiming to collect spraint for DNA analysis.
We are aiming to survey a number of different sites on the day, so we would appreciate help from anybody with previous experience of Otter surveys who would be willing to show others what to look for. If you haven't done this before, you will be very welcome - any help will be much appreciated!
If you are able to take part, please let me know by Friday 18th May indicating your level of experience. I will then send you further details of the event.
