D1081/001/03 - Caddisfly (Trichoptera) records from Britain' held by UK Trichoptera (Caddisfly) Recording Scheme

Subject Insects
Abstract The Trichoptera dataset was assembled by the UK Trichoptera (Caddisfly) Recording Scheme. The scheme is linked to those for Mayflies and Stoneflies under the umbrella of the Riverfly Recording Schemes which is one of the Biological Records Centre family of schemes. The data comes from a wide range of sources ranked in terms of contribution: volunteer recorders; statutory monitoring bodies, especially the Environment Agency; national and local entomological and natural history publications and ‘grey’ literature; museum collections; local record centres; consultants. The principal aim of the Caddisfly Recording Scheme is to collate all available caddis records to produce comprehensive distribution maps and conservation reviews. Several of the data sets it contains are independently submitted to the NBN and an effort was made to exclude those from this download. The data set contains duplicate records where the same record has arrived from different sources, e.g. as an entry in a collector’s notebook then as a collated list and possibly then as a published record. The data base is only set up to take data at up to 8 figure grid reference resolution but more detailed data is available for a few records and can be requested from the scheme organiser. Additional information about individual records is sometimes available and can be requested from the scheme organiser.

Original Title Caddisfly (Trichoptera) records from Britain' held by UK Trichoptera (Caddisfly) Recording Scheme
Temporal Coverage Notes Includes records from 1859-2003 of varying quantity. There is a peak of activity in 1941 and also from 1976-88. Recording is still continuing and annual up-dates are an aspiration.
Purpose The records were originally collected for personal interest, for statutory monitoring and during research projects.
Capture Methods A wide range of methods were used by recorders to obtain their data.
Verification/Validation Procedures All records that are not indicated as unconfirmed are to be regarded as accepted. The Recording Scheme is interested in almost any caddis record but then applies a verification procedure with records that fail not being added to the data set sent to the NBN. Standard procedures are used for record validation. Verification procedures differ between records. The following suggests records that will be accepted:- a voucher specimen in the form of a specimen or photograph submitted to the recording scheme; a record from a person known to have submitted accurate records in the past as recorder or identifier; a species that at the time of the record was easy to identify using easily available identification works and is fairly common within its previously known range. A record that fails the criteria will be noted for further investigation before it is accepted. They may be added but marked as unconfirmed if they seem possibly correct but cannot be confirmed. Records that seem implausible are not submitted to the NBN.
