Freshwater Leech Identification Course

Thursday, 07 May 2026. 10:00 - 16:00
£10
Treborth Botanic Garden Bangor , LL57 2RQ https://www.bangor.ac.uk/treborth
Hosted by: Cofnod events@cofnod.org.uk

There aren’t many species of freshwater Leech in Britain and many can be successfully identified in the field. This makes them a distinctive and manageable group to learn about. Rachel Davies from the Freshwater Leech Recording Scheme will guide us through their biology and identification methods. There will be a comprehensive collection of preserved Leeches for us to work with, giving plenty of opportunity to see a wide range of UK species. Sampling techniques will also be demonstrated in the Treborth ponds, and so we’ll be able to familiarise ourselves with live specimen identification techniques. Leeches are an under-recorded group of species, and this course is a rare opportunity to learn about them in North Wales.
