BioFlits at Plas Tan y Bwlch - The Results.
A very successful Bioflits (a BioBlitz carried out through the medium of Welsh, the first of its kind!) was held at Plas Tan y Bwlch on 30th June. It was organised by Cymdeithas Edward Llwyd in conjunction with Cofnod, as part of Cymdeithas Edward Llwyd’s focus on biological recording for 2012 (Blwyddyn y BioGyfri).
Despite the poor weather there was a very good turnout. The results can be viewed on the Cofnod website. Over 200 species were recorded, and for about a quarter of these Cofnod did not previously have records in its database for that area. Spiders and plants made up over 2/3 of the species recorded, being less affected by wet weather than the moths, birds and mammals which would normally have made a greater contribution to the total.
Richard Gallon, the spider expert who attended, was very pleased with his record of Theridiosoma gemmosum (a tiny metallic silver spider) in particular, as it is only the fourth record for North Wales!
