Bwletin misol Llen Natur #104

30 October 2016

Truly an Indian Summer! Was there ever its like - no doubt there was! And the danger is that it'll be pouring with rain by the time you read this! It was all thanks apparently to the "blocking high" over Scandinavia, which brought easterly winds all the way from Siberia - with a clutch of rare birds. Yellow-browed warbler, Siberian dunnock and booted warbler to name but three. Read about them in this issue amd look for them in glorious technicolour in our Species Dictionary on the website. Our house sparrows here are nest building, meadow sweet is in full flower in Llanrug, and there's the most remarkable crop of haws, blackberries and acorns you ever saw! Yes it has been an autumn to raise the spirits (compare the destructive floods of recent autumns). So am I becoming paranoid when I find myself wondering whether we should link this fine weather to the sinister trends that caused the floods? Nonsense I hear you say, but no more nonsense than to believe that NO weather is evidence for Climate Change! And since the atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have recently crossed 400ppm., and 2016 is already destined to be the warmest ever year globally, it's a only fair to ask....

Our French language editor attaches a seasonal poem by Paul Verlaine (1844 – 1896, above) - not the most cheery ever written (Graham's exact words were "miserable old sod"!) but enjoy anyway.
