Lesser Celandine

Species Focus - Lesser Celandine (Ficaria verna or Ranunculus ficaria)

01 March 2021

Written by: Cofnod

There’s no better sign of spring than a carpet of bright yellow flowers on a woodland floor. Lesser Celandine is starting to flower in North Wales right now. This species flowers early, before deciduous woodland trees come in to leaf and shade the ground below them.

Lesser Celandine is a common plant found along woodland paths and can flower in profusion. However, it is surprisingly under-recorded. Please look out for this plant and send in your records to Cofnod using either our Online Recording System or the LERC Wales Mobile App.
