Redwing © Niall OwenSpecies Focus - Redwing (Turdus iliacus)
With regular recent bouts of freezing weather, you might be lucky to encounter a flock of Redwings raiding a hawthorn for berries. Hard weather often drives these winter migrants from our upland ffridd down into the lowlands. Those with orchards might be lucky in attracting a few into gardens on their quest for windfall apples (assuming the blackbirds haven’t eaten them all already!). If you have any old apples kicking about in the fruit bowl, now’s the time to slice them in half and put them on your lawn.
It won’t be long now before virtually all of them head off back to their continental breeding grounds, so please look out for these small thrushes and submit your sightings to us using the Cofnod ORS, LERC Wales app or BirdTrack.
