RSPB Conwy - BioBlitz News Release
RSPB Conwy’s Big Nature Count
This July, discover RSPB Conwy’s fascinating wildlife in a race against the clock
On 2 and 3 July, RSPB Conwy is inviting children and adults alike to capture and count the reserve’s most cherished creatures and critters – all in just 24 hours.
The historical wetland reserve is hoping to find out exactly what’s been snuffling and settling on the site for the past 21 years, while discovering both old and new wildlife – some of which has never been found on the reserve before.
Children and families can discover, capture and explore the abundant wildlife to their hearts content throughout the whole weekend, while nature enthusiasts and experts will be on hand to help with identification.
Helen Jowett, RSPB Conwy’s Visitor Experience Manager, explains: “RSPB Conwy was once a muddy moonscape when it was first established in the 1990s but has since developed into an important landmark for the local community, rich in copious nature. To celebrate and our fantastic wildlife we want your help to find out exactly what lives in the wetlands - from water rails and warblers to moths and dragonflies. You don’t need to be an expert to get involved as we’ll have plenty of handy tips and hints to help you - as well as good piece of cake from the café if you need some sustenance along the way!”
RSPB Conwy is working in partnership with Cofnod, the North Wales Environmental Information Service, to help identify and record the data live online.
Richard Gallon, from Cofnod, said: “The weekend is a brilliant opportunity for the whole family to enjoy the outdoors and get closer to nature. Any bioblitz or hunt for wildlife works best when lots of people get involved - so the more hands on deck the better, as the more wildlife we’ll find!
The Big Nature Count kicks off with a Bat and Moth Evening on Saturday 2 July where families can get up close with our nocturnal fluttering friends. Places for the event must be booked in advance and please contact Helen Jowett on 01492 584091 for more details.
The fun continues on Sunday 3 July where families can enjoy a full day with nature - from bird-ringing, moth-trapping and pond-dipping, to some exciting nature walks to discover the birds, wild flowers and minibeasts on the reserve.
Bioblitz activities throughout Sunday are free with events running throughout the day. A full programme is available on rspb.org.uk/conwy. Advance booking is not required, but spaces on each session are limited so please arrive early to avoid disappointment. Entry to the reserve is free for RSPB members and there is a small charge for non-members.
RSPB Conwy is situated just off junction 18 of the A55 and is open from 9.30am - 5pm every day.
